PDS Session C: You Might As Well Be Happy ($60)

Location: Singer 151

Ellen B. Gélinas, humorist, educator, and counselor, presents a lively and interactive look at the many ways we can increase our laughter quotient. You are respectfully invited to learn how to overcome some of your own roadblocks to a balanced and fun-filled life. You just might laugh at your own foibles, practice the power of “NO”, argue with the all too serious rules we hang on to. And you could discover a short-cut to using“appropriate” humour and understanding our differences. Hopefully, you will dare to design a bodacious “TO DO” list and leave with a smile on your face and a plan in your heart.

Ellen B. Gélinas
During the course of her 50-something years, Ellen has lost and found her sense of humour a number of times!  Her  career path has included: taking blood, assisting dentists, civilly serving, raising children, chairing home and school, acting amateurishly, volunteering, completing a 20-year BA, early family intervention, instructing, an MEd in adult education, counseling, facilitating, 40 consecutive years of marriage, and most importantly, grandmothering!

A serendipitous side trip took her to a conference all about the benefits of humour as presented by professionals in the fields of medicine, anthropology, counseling and education. Since then she continues to develop all her workshop and counseling skills to include a balanced approach to life that embraces a healthy and humourous outlook.

PDS Session F: Campus Safety and Security in a Cyber World ($50)

This session will be delivered in two parts.

Part A: Cyber Threats on Campus
The Internet has provided a powerful set of innovative tools and services that have transformed many aspects of early 21st century life. This is particularly true in higher education but we must be aware that every new application of technology (social networking for example) comes with a dark side. This part of the presentation will discuss the latest threats in cyber space and present some effective legal, social and technical responses to cyber crime.

Part B: Emergency Messaging on Campus
Recent tragic events on campuses have led many post-secondary educational institutions in the United States and Canada to introduce emergency messaging capabilities as a way of alerting campus communities about 'short fuse' emergency situations. This presentation will provide an overview of the communications technologies being deployed, and discuss some of the human, policy, legal and technical factors that ultimately influence the effectiveness of emergency messaging on university and college campuses.

Location: Singer 151

Life is all about RELATIONSHIPS.. relationships at home with loved ones, at work with colleagues and managers, at school with teachers and fellow students, with relatives and friends and most importantly, with oneself. All these relationships are important to our well being and survival. Not all of these relationships feel good! We have been brought up in a world where we have learned that,
“My way is THE way.....and you should join me in my way!!!” This is what causes so much conflict and stress and what ultimately damages our relationships. We have become a culture of arguments, debates and score keepers. We really want to be RIGHT..... Today’s workshop will present some food for thought and some strategies to help you both understand and be understood, as well as some tools for putting laughter back in your life.

PDS Session H: Dealing with Difficult People ($60)

Location: Singer 161

Have you noticed that some people are and always will be difficult? They can be disagreeable, abrasive, uncooperative, unreasonable, volatile and totally uncommunicative. They can literally ruin your day in an instant. Their negative attitude and behaviour results in lower productivity for themselves and their co-workers. Difficult people are also a major cause of employee turnover and low morale within organizations.
Knowing how to handle their frustrating and disruptive behaviour is one of the most important skills you can have. This session will help you to develop and practice healthier responses to those who are making your life miserable.
