| Description: | In 2005, the Louisiana coast suffered the devastation of two major hurricanes – Katrina and Rita. Louisiana State University, though relatively unscathed by the storms themselves, unexpectedly became a medical triage and housing facility for thousands of evacuees, in addition to assuming critical telecommunications and business continuity functions for many local, state, and federal agencies. Although LSU and central IT in particular already had a business continuity plan, the events of 2005 motivated LSU leadership to re-evaluate LSU’s business continuity and D/R strategies, and to strengthen approaches for internal and external communications. Three years later, Hurricane Gustav generated the largest human evacuation in U.S. history. This presentation will describe how LSU put to the test its newly developed business continuity and communications strategies during the ensuing crisis, as well as offer suggestions for successful disaster planning efforts. |
