About ResNet and the Annual Symposium
From ResNetWiki
ResNet is a national organization dedicated to the advancement and research of residential networking technologies and living-learning environments within academic institutions. Students, staff, and faculty from academic institutions around the world participate in the ResNet Listserv and attend the annual ResNet Symposium, a gathering of administrators and specialists who plan, purchase, implement and support residential information technologies in their respective academic institutions. The ResNet organization, conceived in 1992, is dedicated to the research and advancement of technologies and services that support living-learning residential environments at higher education institutions. ResNet also provides an international forum for discussion, collaboration, and professional growth via the organization's many on-line resources and its Annual ResNet Symposium and Professional Development Seminar. In June 2008, ResNet became a not-for-profit corporation recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The ResNet Board of Directors provides leadership to the ResNet organization through guidance and management of all organization activities and services, including:
- ResNet web site (www.resnetsymposium.org)
- ResNet-L listserv (resnet-l@listserv.nd.edu)
- Annual ResNet Symposium convened at host institutions since 1994
- ResNet Professional Development Seminar conducted at the Symposium
- Research conducted by ResNet Applied Research Group (RARG)
- Collaborations with other IT-related professional organizations, including ACUTA, ACUHO, EDUCAUSE, SIGUCCS, and others
The Board of Directors is guided by the Bylaws, which details the structure and operation of the organization. The Board of Directors presently consists of both voting and non-voting members from nine higher educational institutions from around the U.S. and Canada.
Now entering its 15th year, the ResNet organization has evolved from its simple roots during an informal discussion at Educom, into an internationally recognized professional organization engaging in dialogue, collaboration with vendors and other professional organizations, and professional development. Via its research entity, the ResNet Applied Research Group (RARG), ResNet has contributed to the international higher education community by conducting and publishing original research on networking technologies, music and entertainment, security, and technology support.
This research and other activities have led to collaborations with other professional groups, creating dialogue and increasing the understanding of technology and service issues related to supporting residential areas. The ResNet organization also offers many opportunities for professional growth, from volunteering in a variety of organizational activities, conducting original research, or presenting at the Symposium, to attending the Professional Development Seminar.
As it looks to the future, the ResNet organization seeks to build upon these and other services while retaining the “grassroots” feel that has emerged through the years at the Symposium and through the listserv. Please contact the president or any other member of the Board of Directors to find out more about the ResNet organization and its offerings.
